The program is available to registered participants in Healthy Forest Alliance trainings, prescribed burns, and workdays, as well as select partner events. Priority is given to practitioners who do not yet have access to their own compliant wildland PPE.

Yes. We charge a small fee per day to help cover cleaning and replacement of damaged or worn equipment. Thanks to support from the California Fire Foundation, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), and Wolfpack Gear, we’re able to keep these rental fees as low as possible.

Typical inventory includes wildland Nomex shirts and pants, wildland helmets, eye and hearing protection, leather work gloves, and line gear/field packs (including gear from Wolfpack Gear). Availability of specific sizes and items may vary by event.

Generally, no. Participants are responsible for bringing their own appropriate leather boots (above the ankle, lug-soled) suitable for wildland fire operations.

Please submit your rental request as early as possible. We recommend at least 72 hours before the start of the event so we can confirm availability and sizing.

We understand that normal wear and tear occurs during field work. However, if items are lost or negligently damaged, you may be charged additional replacement costs in line with our fee schedule.

Light brushing or shaking off debris is helpful, but please do not attempt deep cleaning or repairs on your own. HFA will manage cleaning and maintenance in accordance with manufacturer guidance.

No. PPE rented through this program is for use only on the event(s) for which it was requested and approved. Please contact us if you have a special circumstance or extended training need.

We’ll match you with the closest available sizes and gear. If something isn’t available, we’ll let you know before the event so you can make alternative plans.

Absolutely. We gratefully accept new or gently used wildland PPE. Email training@healthyforestalliance.org for donation guidelines.

Eventually, yes—we strongly encourage practitioners to acquire their own PPE as they progress. The loaner program is designed to help people get started and stay safe until they’re able to purchase gear.

Yes. Loaner PPE meets required safety standards for prescribed fire activities and NWCG trainings. Participants are still responsible for wearing PPE correctly and following event safety instructions.
