PRESCRIBED FIRE & FUELS REDUCTION
We promote the safe use of prescribed fire to reduce hazardous fuels, restore healthy ecosystems, and lower wildfire intensity. By supporting training, collaboration, and community burns, we help normalize prescribed fire as a vital, science-based tool for proactive wildfire prevention and landscape resilience.
DEFENSIBLE SPACE FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
We empower homeowners to create and maintain defensible space through education, tools, and hands-on support. Proper vegetation management and home hardening reduce ignition risk, improve firefighter access, and increase safety for families and neighborhoods in fire-prone areas.
COMMUNITY WILDFIRE EDUCATION & COLLABORATION
We engage communities through education, outreach, and partnerships that foster fire awareness and collective responsibility. By supporting local action and fire-adapted planning, we help residents prepare for wildfire and build resilience together.

The Healthy Forest Alliance is dedicated to protecting communities, restoring ecosystems, and advancing the safe use of prescribed fire as a vital tool for wildfire resilience. We bring together property owners, fire practitioners, and community partners to reduce hazardous fuels, restore forest health, and build a culture of “good fire” across California.
Through training, equipment support, and scholarships, we empower local practitioners and landowners with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to use fire safely and effectively. Guided by science, rooted in tradition, and committed to community safety, our mission is to ensure that California’s forests, grasslands, and communities thrive for generations to come.
Our History
Founded by experienced fire professionals and community leaders, the Healthy Forest Alliance began with a simple vision: to close the gap between wildfire risk and community preparedness. Our founders recognized that while catastrophic wildfires were increasing, property owners and grassroots fire practitioners lacked access to the training, equipment, and support needed to carry out safe prescribed burns.
Since our inception, HFA has:
- Secured grants and donations to build equipment caches, including engines, UTVs, radios, PPE, and firing devices.
- Established the Fire Practitioner Scholarship Fund to help students and volunteers access NWCG-certified training.
- Partnered with fire safe councils, community organizations, and state agencies to expand the use of prescribed fire across California.
- Developed programs such as the Prescribed Fire Equipment & Trailer Program and Good Fire Rewards Initiative to directly support landowners and practitioners.
Today, HFA is a statewide leader in grassroots wildfire resilience. With deep roots in professional fire service, decades of hands-on training experience, and a commitment to collaboration, we continue to advance our mission of restoring healthy forests, supporting fire practitioners, and protecting communities from catastrophic wildfire.
