Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation Receives Contract to Support Civicorps Oakland with Firefighter Type 2 and Chainsaw Training

Truckee, CA — The Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation (HFA) is proud to announce it has been awarded a contract to assist Civicorps Oakland in delivering Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) and chainsaw training courses to Corpsmembers preparing for careers in wildland fire and natural resource management.

Through this partnership, the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation will provide instruction, curriculum coordination, and field-based training aligned with national wildland fire standards. The program is designed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge, practical skills, and safety competencies required for entry-level wildland firefighter positions.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to building the next generation of fire practitioners,” said Richard Carvalho, Founder and Executive Director of the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation. “By working alongside Civicorps Oakland, we are expanding access to high-quality training while creating meaningful career pathways in wildfire response and prescribed fire.”

The contracted training program will include:

  • Firefighter Type 2 foundational coursework

  • Wildland fire behavior and safety principles

  • Hands-on field exercises and crew-based operations

  • Introduction to wildland fire chainsaw use and safety

  • Emphasis on leadership, teamwork, and risk management

The Firefighter Type 2 qualification serves as a critical entry point into the wildland fire service, preparing individuals to work on hand crews, prescribed fire operations, and wildfire suppression assignments. Chainsaw training will focus on safe and effective saw operations under wildland fire conditions, reinforcing situational awareness and hazard mitigation.

Civicorps Oakland provides education and job training to young adults while completing important conservation and community resilience projects throughout the region. This collaboration strengthens workforce development opportunities while supporting broader wildfire preparedness goals.

Funding through this contract enables the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation to deploy qualified instructors, coordinate training materials, and deliver hands-on field experiences that meet professional standards.

The Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation remains committed to strengthening communities through good fire by investing in education, safety, and workforce development initiatives that advance wildfire resilience nationwide.
