Through the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation and the Good Fire Training Network, we have delivered professional chain saw training courses for Civicorps crews to strengthen field safety and workforce capability.
These courses focus on safe, efficient chainsaw operations in wildland and fuels management environments. Participants receive both classroom instruction and hands-on field training covering saw components, maintenance, sharpening, troubleshooting, and manufacturer safety standards. Strong emphasis is placed on personal protective equipment (PPE), situational awareness, escape planning, and hazard recognition.
In the field, trainees practice proper starting procedures, cutting techniques, limbing, bucking, and small tree felling under direct supervision. Instruction reinforces body positioning, saw control, communication between saw team members, and risk mitigation strategies aligned with nationally recognized wildland fire standards.
For Civicorps participants, this training supports career pathways in forestry, fuels reduction, wildfire response, and conservation work. Developing competent, safety-focused sawyers directly strengthens project efficiency and reduces operational risk.
By investing in chainsaw proficiency, we are helping Civicorps crews build confidence, expand technical skill sets, and contribute more effectively to forest health and wildfire resilience projects across California.
