Building prescribed fire capacity in California requires collaboration, structure, and sustained support. Through the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation and our Good Fire Training Network (www.good-fire-training.org), we proudly provide cooperation, training, and fiscal sponsorship to California’s Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs), Training Exchanges (TREX), and other community-based prescribed fire events.
PBAs are grassroots networks of landowners, volunteers, and fire professionals working together to safely implement good fire. Our role is to strengthen those efforts by offering structured training, qualified instructors, equipment resources, and administrative backing that ensures events meet recognized safety and operational standards.
At Training Exchanges (TREX), participants gain immersive, field-based experience in planning and implementing prescribed burns under the mentorship of experienced practitioners. We support these events by helping coordinate instructors, providing task book evaluation pathways, assisting with logistics, and in many cases serving as a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor to receive and manage grant funds on behalf of local partners.
Fiscal sponsorship is especially critical for emerging PBAs that may not yet have nonprofit status. By providing compliant financial oversight, grant management, and insurance coordination support, we help local groups focus on what matters most—putting safe, effective fire on the ground.
Our cooperation also includes equipment cache access, PPE support, burn boss consulting, and operational planning assistance. From coastal grasslands to Sierra foothill oak woodlands, these partnerships expand the reach of prescribed fire across diverse California landscapes.
Together, we are building a statewide network of trained practitioners and empowered communities. By aligning training, funding, and operational support, we are helping California safely restore fire to fire-adapted ecosystems—one collaborative burn at a time.
